As the name
indicates, the award is in memory of
Harvey Buchan, one of Lakeshore's finest members.
This
award is presented to a Kiwanian in recognition of
their long dedicated service to Kiwanis and the community.
Harvey
joined Lakeshore Kiwanis in the early
60`s. He was president of the club in 1967, the year that
Sault Ste. Marie hosted the E.C.&C. District Convention for
the first time, and Harvey was an integral part of the
convention committee. The major social function of the
convention was the Blue Ox barbecue at Achigan Lake,
north of the Sault on the ACR and Harvey made numerous
trips up the ACR preparing the site, etc. for the invasion
of Kiwanians from all over the district.
In
1979, when the Sault hosted their second district
convention, Harvey was a key member of the barbecue
committee, responsible for hosting Blue Ox Barbecue #2
at Camp Wakonda – with 1500 people
in attendance at
the camp – quite a pile of food being barbecued and served.
If
anyone cares to look at the Kiwanian of the year
plaque you will fine Harvey's name on top.
In
1975, Harvey had the foresight to see that unless
Lakeshore Kiwanis undertook a major project, the
club would slowly deteriorate. The perfect opportunity
came along with the availability of the purchase of Camp
Wakonda from the United Church. Harvey, along with
Kiwanians Wayne Desing and Dorn Lewis, made a superb
presentation to the club, and for an investment of $30,000,
Lakeshore Kiwanis was in the real estate business.
Harvey didn't rest then, but was the driving force behind
Camp Wakonda, heading up his last work party one week
prior to his sickness being diagnosed.
Over
the years Harvey spearheaded many projects – the
construction and beginning of the Soogoma building, the
opening of the White Cross Center, and the construction
of the Resource Ranger Building. It is now the caretakers
residence at Camp Wakonda – to name but a few.
He was always a major contributor to any fundraising
project undertaken by the club. (He was a regular
member of the top 10 Cadillac Club Sellers).
One
quality that always stands out was his democratic
team approach. When we first brought up the concept of
the cash lottery, it was fully discussed at a regular meeting.
Harvey, in his wisdom, considered the project, and after
weighing the pros and cons, voted against it, probably figuring
it was too much of a gamble for our club. As we all know,
the project was approved by the majority of the members
and turned out to be our most successful project; the first
year selling out in 21 days. And do you want to know which
Kiwanian sold the most tickets – Harvey.
There
are many Kiwanians who get involved and do a
superb job in fundraising activities, but may not be as active
in the other side of Kiwanis, the service to others through
financial support and work parties. There are many Kiwanians
who thrive on attending numerous work parties, but are
reluctant to get involved on the fundraising side.
As you can
see, Harvey was at the top of both
sides of Kiwanis, whether raising funds or
working and spending the funds.
In
1979 Harvey received a gold card, distinguishing
him as a life member in Kiwanis International, the first time that
Lakeshore Kiwanis has had such an honor bestowed upon
one of its members in fact maybe the first time any Sault
Kiwanian had this honor bestowed upon him.
Community Involvement
He
was a past president and long time member of the
Sault Ste. Marie Retardation Association and past president
of the Sault Ste. Marie Builders Association. In 1982 when
Sault Tech / Lakeway secondary school had their 60 - year
reunion - who was the driving force behind it - Chairman Harvey.
During
his operation of one of the most reputable
construction companies in the Sault (Samson Construction)
he gained the utmost respect of his peers, not only in the
Soo but right across the province. So much so, that he was
elected the president of the Ontario General Contractors
Association for the 1982-83 year, a position unthought of to
be held by a person from a small Northern Ontario
Community and Company.
After
reflecting upon what has just been outlined,
what more fitting commemoration can our club bestow upon
Harvey and the Buchan family than the "Distinguished Service
Award - In Recognition of Long Dedicated Service to
Kiwanis and the Community."
